Five Guys
On Sunday I popped down to London and graced Five Guys with a visit.
Joined by my sister and her boyfriend, I had originally planned on hitting up Shakeshack but alas, it was super busy.
Slightly disheartened, we wandered round to the corner to Five Guys where we tentatively joined the end of the queue that was creeping outside into the pouring rain.
It moved quickly though, and before we knew it, we were being greeted by a chirpy member of staff who moved us towards to the counter to place our order.
Josh went for the Cheese and Bacon Burger with bbq sauce, and Cecilia and myself went for Cheeseburgers with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce and ketchup.
A few glances around at other orders told us that we would only need one large fries between us - they're huge portions.
As you've probably guessed by the fact we had to queue, getting a table was a tricky business.
Luckily there were three of us so whilst Josh waited at the counter for our order number to be called, Cecilia and I went hunting for seats. We found a nice big table for us (thank God) but there were so many people waiting around for tables. I think one girl stood there holding her food for about 10 minutes, so I really wouldn't recommend negotiating this system on your own.
Your order is given to you in a brown paper bag with everything chucked in.
We eagerly unwrapped our burgers and tore open the bag of chips for sharing purposes.
As you can tell by the pictures, the burgers were that right kind of squishy. The type I'd describe as 'MeatMarket squishy'.
Unfortunately, the Five Guys burgers were nowhere near as good.
I'm no burger connoisseur, but I do have a hierarchy of burgers in my head...
1. MeatMarket
2. Patty & Bun
3. Byron
4. GBK
(I still have a long list to try, including Bleecker St. Burger, Lucky Chip, Mother Flipper, and Dirty Burger)
I'd say Five Guys slots in either just above, or on par with, Byron Burger.
The burgers had that great kind of melt in your mouth thing going on, but the flavour just wasn't quite there.
Still, we chowed down in silence, getting cheese and ketchup all over our faces.
The chips I actually preferred to the burgers, and that never ever happens.
They're quite potatoey (is that a word??) and I really enjoyed that substantial feeling it gave them.
Anyway, yeah, they were good.
This is more of a review than anything I've ever written.
I didn't intend for that to happen, I just have such mixed feelings about this place and feel a little glum about the fact that I've been wanting to try a Five Guys burger since they opened their first restaurant here in the summer.
Oh well, onwards and upwards!
I'm still yet to try those that are apparently considered the best of the bunch!
I know Bleecker St. are at UCL on Wednesday, and I just so happen to have a train to catch from Euston Station just around the corner that very day...

That's a disappointment! I've not been here yet, might have to give it a miss I think!

I actually haven't which is odd since we live about 5/10 mins from one.
DeleteThey're on my list though - I have a list of about 100 restaurants I want to try! Just wish I had the money to fund my eating habit, haha xx
